Is your balcony your new urban forest space?

Is your balcony your new urban forest space?

Being indoors for the greater part of 2020 made us yearn to be outdoors amidst Nature more than before. We longed for the fresh air that the greenery around us gives off into the atmosphere. Those little patches of green that we used to ignore on our way to work or on walks, now looked appealing from our window.

On the other hand, staying at home for months also turned us all into eager gardeners. Even if most of us were green thumbs at it, we never gave up in creating our own private mini forest in our windows or balcony. Because these green spaces are our own oxygen tanks.

Forest bathing at home

Shinrin –yoku is a Japanese word meaning ‘forest bathing’. It is a simple yet very healthy exercise of walking under a canopy of trees and soaking in the experience while breathing in fresh oxygen from the surrounding tree cover. It was recommended by health experts in Japan when they felt that the citizens were overworking at their offices indoors and not getting enough fresh air and exercise.

You don’t need to look for a forest to do your own bit of healthy forest bathing. You can begin small right there in your window box or pots.

For some very privileged homeowners who have a large balcony area, it is indeed a rich and never-ending supply of fresh oxygen when you turn it into your own private mini forest. Several leading developers like HM Constructions https://www.hmconstructions.com/ are giving much priority to large balconies in their luxury apartment communities.

Oxyrich gardens

You might have learnt about how plants give out oxygen and take in carbon dioxide. This is why it is wise to be surrounded by foliage in your home all the time.

If you want to turn your large balconies into a private urban forest, you need to know which plants to choose to grow. You can opt for the flowering type to invite the tiny birds and butterflies. It’s ethereal to watch the flowers turn lovingly towards the sun the first thing in the morning. Who knows, you might get an added bonus of a Butterfly Park in your mini forest!

If having a few exotic fruits is your scene, you might venture into bonsai or miniature gardening. You can then grow oranges and even figs in your balcony if you know how to do it right. You can learn from several Youtube videos for aspiring gardeners like you.

For a change, try growing a few herbs which you can use in your cooking too. Common herbs like mint, carom, coriander, rosemary, basil, curry leaves, lemon grass, and oregano are easy to grow in pots.

Natural coolers

Vertical gardens are a literally cool and new urban trend that is catching on in modern homes.  They look chic and elegant in the balcony and are also a great décor piece for your home.

The more the plants around you, the cooler the environment becomes. Choose sensibly. Go in for a mix of large and small plants that have both, abundant leaves and natural woody fragrance. Larger the leaves, the more oxygen they will release into the air. The rubber plant is an ideal one to grow and place indoors in hot summers.
