5 tips for moving to your new home during Covid 19

Congratulations! You’ve bought your dream home and must be eager to move into it as soon as possible. After all, isn’t it what you aspired for? So, how do you go about packing your belongings and shifting into your new home during the pandemic? We give you a few cautious tips.

Declutter, discard, donate

One of the first tasks to ensure a safe and comfortable moving experience to your new home is to let go of the things you will not need. If you are buying new furniture, appliances, etc, draw up a list of the old stuff and sell, discard or donate so you have fewer things to pack and move. This will also cut down your moving cost considerably. Also, it will mean a shorter time to pack and move your belongings and lesser exposure and interaction time with the packers.

Look up movers and packers

It is safest to do all the packing yourself. But, if for some reason you are unable to do so, there are a number of professional movers and packers who can make the task easier for you. Look for established movers and packers with a good track record, and fix a rate online or over a call to avoid any personal interaction with the packers when they arrive. You could ask for recommendations within your social circle. Opt for well-known agencies that will follow the sanitation and hygiene rules when they send in their staff to pack and move your things. Before you confirm the booking, ensure: a minimum number of packers are sent, especially if your present house is a small one; that the moving and packing team visiting your house will wear a mask, gloves, carry sanitisers, etc; the staff has passed the strict temperature test before leaving for your house; they have been vaccinated or are Covid negative; the staff will bring sanitized cartons and packing material to pack your things; the staff will bring their own drinking water, etc.

Make all your payment online and avoid cash transactions with the packers for safety.

Minimal time

To ensure that the packers will spend minimal time in your house for safety concerns, you can help out here. Send pictures of the things to be packed and moved so that they can come with appropriate cartons or crates. If you have retained the packing material of large items like the refrigerator and washing machine, keep them ready for the packers. Mark all the boxes with the appropriate rooms that they have to be shifted into in your new home. For example, mark the refrigerator with the word ‘kitchen’ or ‘dining room’ so the packers know exactly where to place them in the quickest time. At your new house, ensure they sanitise all the cartons before they leave.

Mask up and sanitise

On the day the packers are scheduled to arrive, ask everyone at home to wear a mask, and face shield as far as possible, for you and your family’s safety. Sanitise all the furniture, kitchenware, appliances, etc before they are packed. If you are transporting some of your personal belongings in your vehicle, ensure they are packed and sprayed with sanitiser externally.

Safe distance

Before the packers arrive, open up all the windows and switch on the fans to ventilate the house as much as possible. If your house is small, and you feel it will get crowded with the packers in the house, a few members of your family could perhaps, wait in the balcony or outdoors. Remember to avoid the 3 Cs: closed spaces, crowded places, close-contact settings. When you allow the packers into your house keep at least 2 metres distance from them at all times and avoid unnecessary conversation.
